Carriage Driving - New Members start here!

Joining a new club is always unfamiliar and confusing. This page will guide you through your first Meet.

First, you must join the Club. The owner of your horse/pony must also join. All memberships are dealt with by the Honorary Secretary:

Windsor Park Equestrian Club
PO Box 1155
LIGHTWATER
GU18 5WU
Tel: +44 (0)1276 472169
Email: secretary.wpec@btinternet.com

Write or telephone and she will send you details of membership. Remember to tell her that you are a driver because she will also deal with applications from show-jumpers and dressage riders.

You do not need to be a member of the BHDTA as part of your membership subscription is paid to them to cover your insurance while competing at the club. The club runs to BHDTA national rules.

All BHDTA membership enquiries should be directed to:

Before you can compete you must have passed at least B.D.S. Level 1 (1998) or the B.H.D.T.A. assessment. By appointment we can arrange an assessment for you on the ground before your competition. Allow at least 30 minutes for the assessment and bear in mind that if you do not pass you will not be allowed to compete that week-end.

You will be sent an Year Book for the year; read it especially the general conditions at the front. Carefully note the closing date for entries of the Meet that you wish to enter ; late entries cannot be accepted.

Complete the entry form and send it off with your entry fee in good time. [ Click here ] to view an example of a properly completed entry form.

When you arrive at the Great Park enter through Bishopsgate (see the map in the Year Book.) Drive to the driving- lorry box park and park where the wardens direct you.

Check your times on the display boards by the Driving Caravan and collect you number(s) from the Driving Caravan. Your dressage time is fixed but the Judge in the Cones Caravan may let you go early if you ask. Marathon times are displayed later in the morning. For each different class that you enter you will be given a separate number which should be worn for that class only.

Dressage and cones are held on the Cannon Ground which is opposite the Driving Caravan and through the gate in the fence. Report to the steward in charge of your arena so that he knows you are present. Report to the cones marshall after your dressage so that he knows you are present and ready.

You can warm up on the Cannon Ground but respect the other drivers, only pedestrians have an automatic right of way! Do not warm up alongside arenas in use and never enter an arena unless the steward has asked you. You must not warm up in an empty arena even if it has finished for the day without asking permission.

You must be properly dressed to walk the cones course and always ask permission from the Judge or cones marshall. When you start your cones competition salute the Judge and wait for the bell to be rung.

Do not be nervous. Nobody will stare at you and nobody will laugh. We all started on a first day. You are surrounded by new friends. Ask them anything , they will all willingly help you.

When you have finished your dressage and cones go back to the box park and check your marathon times. When the marathon course has been opened at about 1p.m. on Saturday you can collect your map of the course from the Driving Caravan and walk the obstacles. You must not drive on the course. If you are in any doubt at all ask how you are meant to get to the obstacles and where if anywhere you are allowed to take a car etc.

On the Sunday turn up in time to prepare yourself properly and be at the start of section "A" 5 minutes early for a harness check. If you retire on the course report to the Time Keeper at the end of section "E" and tell him.

As in any sport there are a few "shooting" offences:

NEVER EVER DRIVE ON A MOWN GRASS VERGE
NEVER EVER DRIVE A MOTORISED VEHICLE ON THE BACK SAND TRACK
DO NOT LET YOUR DOG OFF THE LEAD
NEVER EVER LET A DOG LOOSE OUT IN THE PARK WHERE YOU THINK NO-ONE WILL SEE - WE WILL!
NEVER EVER TAKE THE BRIDLE OFF WHILE THE HORSE IS PUT TO !
And finally, drive safely and have fun !!

Please contact our Driving Show Secretary for entries. All general enquiries to the organiser.
